Eldorado Park Hope Centre for the Disabled is a Non- Profit Organisation that was established in 1994 by APD Greater Johannesburg in order to provide a stable environment where people with disability from Eldorado Park and surrounding communities could develop new skills and earn income. It was then called Saint Raphael Protective Workshop for the Physically Disabled. In 2005 APD –Saint Raphael Protective Workshop for the Physically Disabled became autonomous under the leadership of Dr. Jerry Hope. The name of the organisation was therefore changed from Saint Raphael to The Jerry Hope Protective Workshop for the Physically Disabled Trust.
When Jerry Hope Protective Workshop was registered, it was registered as a Trust. The organisation encountered a lot of problems as it was an NGO but using a Trust Certificate. For this reason the board took a resolution to change the name to Eldorado Park Hope Centre for the Disabled 241-273 NPO.
The Beneficiaries
There are currently thirty four beneficiaries accessing the services of the organisation at the Workshop, who comes from Eldorado Park and surrounding communities. They come from disadvantaged communities in South of Johannesburg. The work performed by the beneficiaries of the Workshop encompasses easy manual labour like packaging, assembling or manufacturing.
Remarkable and unique
Among other service providers of such kind – is that the services the Workshop currently renders are free of charge to the physically disabled. This means that admission or attendance fee needs to be paid. In short, the Workshop is exceptional in the sense that the disability grant is entirely at the beneficiaries’ disposal. Moreover, the physically disabled receive an additional income when there is work done.
Remuneration
The beneficiaries’ remuneration is arranged according to their daily attendance and their performance while the severity of disability is taken into consideration in order to secure a socially acceptable and just compensational system. However, it remains the policy of the workshop that only persons with physical disabilities and who receives grant are eligible.
